The Hawaii County Council approved allocating $500,000 last week for new playground equipment at Honomu Park.

The capital improvements are intended to make the playground compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and provide safe flooring, in addition to new equipment.

Council member Valerie Poindexter, who introduced the bill, told the Tribune-Herald last month she was proposing a design similar to what was installed at the Mauna Kea Recreation Area last summer.

She said the budget includes “wiggle room” should constructions costs rise.
